Changes
In the aftermath of the second world war, many countries took time to recover from it. This time of peace and recuperation for the countries of the world was the perfect time to decide on new peace treaties and conditions of war time. The Geneva Convention is one such condition of war that was updated and edited after the war. The treatment of a most prisoners of war was not suitable for anyone to live with and so it was agreed upon that the expected conditions that future prisoners are held under must be improved.
Still standing today are the Thai-Burma railway and many of Germany's Stalags. These structures are permanent proof of the horrific events that surrounded the prisoners of war, and they stand as a reminder not to repeat the past. The Australian soldiers made a valiant sacrifice by being taken prisoner, because if they hadn't fought and fell in Singapore, Australia may have been invaded by the Japanese - a battle Australia would certainly lose.
If Australia had been invaded by the Japanese, the entire country would have been changed as would the culture and people of the country. Australia is a mostly free country and that could have changed very quickly in World War Two. Therefore, as a conclusion, the Australian POWs played a major role in changing the world for better, and saving Australia from becoming something else all together.
